WHY HELISKI IN DECEMBER
The consensus among Eagle Pass heliski guides is that December has it all. Not only do we historically average a 2 meter (6.5 foot) base at tree line by early December, but there are less guests Heliskiing with us each day and less tracks in our tenure. The opportunity to lay down the first tracks of the season on our favorite runs only happens once each year.
The incredible riding in December is a bit of a “Local Secret” due to a few key factors:
- COLD SNOW: December has the shortest days of the year. This may seem like a negative, but it also means that the sun has very little ability to affect our runs. Due to this, all aspects (North, South, East and West facing slopes) of the mountain are holding light, dry powder for your skiing pleasure.
- COLD TEMPERATURES: The short days go hand in hand with cold temperatures. This again helps preserve the light, dry snow for many days after the last storm cycle.
- HIGH-QUALITY POWDER: The combination of short days and cold temperatures create the light and dry “Cold Smoke” that powder fanatics search for year-round. This is the snow that you only need to experience once to be hooked for life.
